Suillus clintonianus

Colville National Forest, Colville, WA

Larch Bolete. This Suillus species is a mycorrhizal associate of larch trees such as tamarack and Western Larch. It is easily recognized by its reddish brown cap with a yellow margin, gelatinous ringed stalk that is yellow above and reddish below, and growth with larches. The caps is sticky to slimy. It can be eaten if the mucous slime layer is removed, but might cause indigestion if this precaution isn't taken. It fruits in the fall, often in great numbers. It is genetically distinct from Suillus grevillei, a European species that looks quite similar
