La lumière vient de derrière la vieille femme: la lueur vive illumine le livre et sa main, si intensément peinte que les rides semblent presque modelées dans l'argile. Son visage reste dans l'ombre. La femme pourrait être la prophétesse biblique Hannah.
Selon l'Evangile de Luc, elle était une veuve agée qui adorait Dieu nuit et jour avec le jeûne et la prière.

Light comes in from behind the old woman: the vivid glow illuminates the book and her hand, so thickly painted that the wrinkles seem almost modelled in clay. Her face remains in shadow. The woman could be the biblical prophetess Hannah. According to the Gospel of Luke, she was an elderly widow who worshipped God night and day with fasting and prayer.
