Birds 23100565.JPG

Yesterday morning, I was working away on my computer when I hear a loud "thud".
It sounded like something had hit the house. When I got up to check the perimeter, I spotted the Top Bird (TB from now on) sitting on my deck.
It was very still, not even moving its head; in general it was behaving very unbird-like. I concluded that TB had hit
one of the windows on that side of the house and it was only when I began to walk away that I noticed Bottom Bird (BB),
which was much less animated even than TB. In fact, it strongly resembled Monty Python's parrot.

I watched the birds for several minutes, and TB never moved, aside from its head. I opened the door, none too quietly,
and even walked out onto the deck, standing perhaps a meter (yard) from TB, almost atop BB. Still no motion from TB.
I managed to take several pictures (none of which was compositionally pleasing) before TB chirped a couple of times then hopped away.

I'm left wondering:
(a) did TB also hit a window, but not as severely?
(b) was TB a mate of BB's and TB was mourning the loss of BB?
(c) ???

Now I know several of you who are reading this are fairly expert when it comes to identifying birds, (AND I KNOW YOUR NAMES!)
and I'm hoping you can not only identify the species of bird, but also its sex (Hmmm...I wonder--do birds have genders?),
and come up with a more plausible explanation.

It is sad scene and it does appear as though the other bird is keeping vigil. V
