Matthias Bernhardt Braun sculpture

Braun's Nativity Scene is an impressive sculptural art work from the baroque period of the 18th century. It is a group of sculptures and reliefs made by renowned baroque artist Matthias Bernhard Braun, who created and left them in the wild nature of New Forest between the town of Dvůr Králové and the village of Kuks. The history of the monument goes back to the date of 26. 2. 1717 when Earl Franz Anton Sporck bought a forest from the town of Dvůr Králové for 2900 guldens, which bordered directly with his manor. The reason for this purchase was acquiring the rocks which towered above this territory. At the same time the earl established two hermitages: one of St. Anthony, the other one of St. Paul. In 1720, the building up of the hermitages was finalized and Braun's sculpture workshop started to work there continuously with some interruptions till 1732. The intention of Earl Sporck was to create a meditation place and trip object for spa visitors of Kuks. Unfortunately during hundreds of years not only the nature – trees, plants, rains, snow and winds – but also vandalism (mainly due to intolerance to biblical themes) influenced negatively these works of art. Hewing of rocks for the construction of the fortress Josefov around 1780 had major impact as well as passing of battles during the Prussia – Austria wars in years 1778 – 1779 and 1866. Current project of Braun's Nativity Scene «Unescomůžeš» supported by Ministry of Culture of Czech Republic introduces the list of sights which Czech Republic plan to register into UNESCO World
