I'm going with 'young' as they didn't fly even though they had spotted me on the opposite shoreline of the west arm of Lake Frederick.
The lead duck had a black face with brighter orange bill than the other three. I'm going with American Black Duck - possibly 'eclipsed' - possibly hybrid with Mallard.
No visible wing color - could not see the color of the legs or feet.
