Conocybe apala

Gig Harbor , Washington

White Dunce Cap or Milky Conecap
A very common and cosmopolitan species, shown several times actual size. It pops up in lawns and grasslands with the morning dew but is usually done and gone by the early afternoon. It has a very fragile hollow stem, white to cream-colored cap and cinnamon brown gills that drop brown to reddish brown spores. Its edibility is unknown, but it is too small to be worth trying and is in a genus that contains known deadly species, so best avoided.
