The castle in Forchheim (also called Kaiserpfalz) was an important town castle of the Bamberg bishop in the town of Forchheim in Upper Franconia. The castle was built in the late 14th century. According to extensive archaeological and architectural studies, it is one of the best-researched complexes of this time in Central Europe.
From the late 14th century, the Bamberg bishops, in particular Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn, built a city castle that became their most important place of residence outside of Bamberg's cathedral immunity. The heart of the complex is the so-called large bower, the former residential building, built from 1391 to the east of the castle. A complex stone chamber air heating system has been preserved there. The Gothic wall paintings, some of which probably come from Bohemian masters, are of great art-historical importance.
