Wojtek, a 500–pound brown bear born in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, achieved international celebrity as a mascot of the Polish army in World War II.
The name Wojtek means ‘happy warrior’.
Wojtek was adopted as a cub by the 22nd Company Polish Army Service and Corps (Artillery) troops in 1943, after an Iranian boy swapped the bear for cans of food.
He helped them carry ammunition at the Battle of Monte Cassino.
After the war he lived in Scotland at Hutton in Berwickshire, before ending his days in Edinburgh Zoo.
Check out his nose...just like the Greyfriar Bobby statue people seem to want to touch the nose.
