Over 30 years old, these are the only plants that I have on our deck that can be poisonous to our dogs. Although they do have this one really big negative, their blooming is something I look forward to each June. They are just so pretty!!!
Over the years, none of our dogs (different generations) have ever taken any interest at all in them. So, maybe animals are smarter than we think. Their totally ignoring the potted lilies is why I continue to grow this one pot of them. Meanwhile, absolutely everything else I grow on my Summer deck is safe for both pet and human consumption. As a safeguard, the pot (that these lilies are in) is too high for casual munching by a Chihuahua. I also make sure than no plant debris from these true lilies ever ends up in the deck. This protects our fur family from accidental ingestion of even the tiniest bit from the lily.
True lilies are related to Amaryllis which are also highly toxic to pets. But I keep those on higher tables where the dogs can't positively reach.
This year, I purchased 3 daylilies from Holland. I probably won't see any flowers on these new starter plants until next year. Although I prefer true lilies, daylilies are not toxic to pets. In fact, they also aren't really lilies. Still, daylily flowers sure can be pretty & do resemble a real lily.
Meanwhile, our true lily (above) blooms once a year. The flowers all come out at once and last about only two or three weeks.
I think these are such pretty flowers. They're happy flowers.
