He is about the only homeowner in our development to mow his own lawn. We have 3 acres.
When we lived Back East on a 1/3 acre, we had a lush bluegrass lawn. Now, we have fescue and whatever grows naturally. A fescue blend was planted because it supposedly is better here for acreage and the regional weather. However, over the years, local plants (wild grasses, clover, whatever) have mixed in with the fescue. With 3 acres, it is difficult to prevent this.
Meanwhile, we tried very hard to still keep a pretty, bluegrass lawn going in at least the small area of our 20x20' front courtyard. Unfortunately, the local conditions wouldn't allow even that. We have laid new sod several times... It didn't matter how hard we worked to keep a perfect bluegrass lawn in even that small area. Extreme weather & native plants wouldn't permit our duplicating what we once had Back East.
Before the current Cheeta riding mower (like the professional lawn services use), my husband mowed with a "do everything" Kubota Tractor https://pbase.com/britestar/image/38432160 with a blade. The tractor was used for a lot of other things, too. For the courtyard, he has always used a walk-behind, hand mower. With the way he does things now, it's hard to think that he grew up as a city boy in NYC and never had a lawn to mow until after we were married.
