The square at the Tiergärtnertor is dominated by the square tower of the city wall in the west, the mighty round Neutor tower in the south and, above all, the towering Kaiserburg in the north. With the building ensemble of half-timbered houses and sandstone buildings, which also include the Albrecht Dürer House and the Pilatus House, it is considered one of the most beautiful places in Nuremberg's old town. The square with the mediaeval well is not only an important tourist attraction but also serves as a meeting place for young and old. In addition to the already mentioned half-timbered houses, you will also find the historical art bunker in one of the streets leading down from the castle.The newly founded Germanisches Museum used the Tiergärtnertor tower as a storage location for its first exhibits. The ogival Tiergärtnertor was built in the second half of the 13th century. Since it turned out to be too small for the ever larger vehicles, it was walled up around 1545. A new, larger one was built right next to it.The naming refers to the burgrave's game reserve, which was located in the moat.
