Alastair - I didn't mean anything , ie, I just copied what Google wrote when I asked the question. I didn't try it. The ringbell site is worth trying out. That is simply a "plug in your observation height" and get the answer. Jim

I am 6 feet 4 inches tall. 1.17 times the square root of the height from the ground to my eyes is just under 3 feet. But if I use inches (76), the result is 10.2 inches. But if I use metres, the result is 1.62 metres. I think I can see a bit further than all of those. :) Or, did you mean use your height in feet, and then give the result in miles? Alastair

Google is a real friend: How do you calculate the distance to the horizon? A old customer of mine was a TWA 747 pilot and he told me once that at “altitude” you can see about 200 miles on a perfect clear day. Good old Walt was a great guy, long gone now, I really enjoyed working for him. Paul
