About 20 years old, she has survived 3 different winters of almost freezing to death during particularly cold weather (below zero Fahrenheit outside and a string of cloudy days causing tempts in the unheated Solar Room to drop dangerously low); plus, another handful of years of suffering from some kind of mold on the wood (that couldn't seem to be cured),
She is today a healthy plant and blooming for just the second time since her troubles began.
Free of both problems, she bloomed once outside last Summer, and that flower was pink.
Her flowers were originally pink when I found her many years ago as a pretty - but unnamed - variety at the supermarket. I lovingly brought her home in the backseat of my car.
Last Fall, we brought her indoors into our living room to try to help her survive the Winter. She was the first to droop when the Solar Room dropped into the 40's. One more Winter of tempts too cold for hibiscuses probably would have been her end. This was the first Winter that we've brought her in from the Solar Room. Her height and pot size made that not an easy task. On the positive side, because she was tall, she currently stands closer to one of the recessed lights in the living room ceiling. That has helped her to do better than most of the other hibiscuses that we tried to winter-over (2022-23) in the main part of our home. Despite some also blooming, those haven't been getting as much light as she is.
In the early Spring, she responded to our efforts & unexpectedly rewarded us with a string of pretty flowers like the one above. Surprisingly the flowers are now bright orange and not pink like they originally were (or like the pink one last Summer). But I'm not complaining.
Later this Spring and in Summer, we'll see what she does when back outside on the deck again. For the past 3 summers outside, she has grown healthier and healthier, despite only putting out only a single pink flower. With repeat pruning, the bark mold (whatever that was) disappeared, and she has grown full with healthy leaves. Hopefully, she'll continue to thrive and also flower outside like she is now doing inside. I don't care if the flowers are pink or orange. Actually, I kind of like these bright orange ones we now have. They're different.
