St. Severi Church in Erfurt
The Roman Catholic St. Severi Church is located on the Domberg in the immediate vicinity of the Erfurt Cathedral. As a unique architectural ensemble, both form the symbol of the Thuringian state capital. Due to its unusual design, the Severikirche is one of the best-known Gothic works in Germany. Very little is known about the early days of the church building. However, historical finds indicate that there was a Benedictine nunnery in its place as early as the 9th century. Around 935 the Augustinian monastery of St. Severi is said to have been built on the Domberg. The church that he probably built was badly destroyed by fire in 1080 and 1142. The new building designed after that gradually fell into disrepair over the course of the 13th century. The current building was built between 1278 and 1400.
