The Marktstraße is a street in the old town of Erfurt and connects the cathedral square in the west with the fish market in the east over a length of 230 meters.Marktstraße has only had its name since 1826. When it was first mentioned in 1223, it was simply called lata platea Erphordie – the street of Erfurt. This indicates that it was one of the first streets in the city to be developed to any degree. In 1341 the first German name was An der Straße . What is meant by this is the via regia , a large long-distance trade route from the Rhine near Mainz via Frankfurt , Erfurt and Leipzig to Breslau , which ran through Marktstraße. In the early modern period, Marktstrasse was sometimes referred to as Breite Strasse before it was given its current name in 1826.
