Well Known Young Man Suffered For Many Weeks. Funeral Sunday Morning
The many friends of Mr. Robert Yates were made sad by the announcement of his death which occurred at the residence of his parents, in West Plant City, at 8:30 o'clock, Saturday morning, December 16th. He lingered for five weeks suffering from the terrible wounds inflicted by the deadly bullet received while bravely performing his duty to the public, the sad circumstances of which are still fresh in the minds of our people.
He bore his sufferings with great patience and christian fortitude, and all that skillful nursing and loving hands could do, was done for him, but death had stamped him, its seal on him, and he calmly and resignedly fell asleep.
Mr. Yates was nearly 23 years old of age and is survived by his devoted wife and two small children, the younger barely four weeks old, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Yates, three sisters, Mrs. Jack Brown, Mrs. Henry Mobley, and Miss Lula, two brothers, W. S. and Arthur, beside several nieces and nephews. All of them have the tender sympathy of their friends in the sad bereavement.
Mr. Yates was a most affectionate and devoted husband, son and brother, posed of a cheerful sunny disposition, he naturally made friends and everyone loved him. He will be sadly missed in his home and on our streets.
The funeral took place from his parents residence, attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances and many were the handsome floral offerings attesting the high esteem in which he was held.
The sad and impressive services were conducted by Rev. Bunyan Stephens, of the Baptist church, and Rev. Bushong, the Christian minister, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in Oak Lawn cemetery.
The pall bearers were: Messrs Pearce, and Lowry and his brother officers, Dudley, Vestel, Vause and Hinton.
Mrs. C. W. Munro (transcript by East Hillsborough Historical Society, Brenda Smith Inlow)
