Barred Owl (Juvenile)

Lake Frederick, Virginia

Drove to our new picnic area, parked and hiked down from the pump station to the primitive trail and headed towards Crooked Run.
Very humid morning - crossed Crooked Run & hiked about 200 yards before turning back.
Got about a third of the way home, when I heard a single Barred Owl call; returned to Crooked Run and found a place to sit hoping for another call - didn’t happen.
But, after several minutes with the binoculars, I spotted this owlet high in an oak tree watching me intently.
Took several distant shots; and slowly advanced to see if I could get more details without spooking the young owl.
I managed to slowly advance to three different views without scaring the youngster off.
Didn't see or hear from any adult owl.

A funny-looking fellow, well on the way to maturity. The owls must have bred over winter? Some of our owls do so, but then our winters aren't so severe.
