Northern Shoveler (male)

Spatula clypeata

As the scientific name implies, these fellows have a very interestingly shaped bill.
They often encircle plankton in a tight pinwheeling group. They dabble while swimming
and sweep their bill from side to side, straining plant and animal material in the transverse ridges of their bill.
