03 Big Yet Very Small

135th and Brougham

Went to the public library and used the 3D printer to print a little bezel trim ring for the key ignition on my truck.
Our public library provides free printer use and PLA to citizens if you have a library card.

Alas, you can print yourself a gun now....I suspect they rightfully watch everyone. Traveler

There was lovely young staffer lady who for the most part babysat me during the setup process until the PLA started placing micro dots all over the print table. I keep asking myself if the next time if I’d be able to do it on my own. Maybe, maybe not. Paul

Wow! As others say, what a great service to provide free to library members. I have never used a 3-D printer, and wouldn't know where to start.

One thing I am not is a 3D model designer. There are a few sites that have 3D STL files designed by other people and post for anyone to use (tip developer) and I found one already built for my application, downloaded it and off the OPL I went. I’ll post before and after in pending. We’re in Savanna Georgia at the moment and will when we get back home. Paul

Did you design it yourself? Please show us the finished product.

Oh and by the way my understanding is some patron donated a large sum of money to the library specifically for printing PLA so it will be several years of free printing till that fund runs out. Paul

My thought process for this entry was although a 3D printer is large the bezel trim ring it’s making for my truck is printing in layers at the micron level. I think I read where it prints at about 200 microns per layer. At 1000 microns to a millimeter that’s small. For those not well versed in the metric system it’s 25.4 mm to the inch. I can put a before and after photo in pending if interested. Paul

How interesting! And as Jim notes, a great service from your local library. Traveller

Neat. What a great service from the library.
I can tell it is small - but what exactly am I looking at?
