The Weed (Wett, Wät, Wätte) was very common in the Franconian villages. It is an artificially created pool or pond, often also a fortified or bricked-in water basin with ramps that can be walked on. The weed (from "waten") was mainly used as a horse trough and as a watering place for cattle. But it also served as a fire extinguishing pond. That is why the weed was always located in a central place in the village and was never without water, even in the dry summer.
