At Mille Lacs Lake

For a few hours yesterday the frozen expanse of Mille Lacs Lake in central Minnesota was a busy airport
for an annual Fly-In. Runways and taxiways were plowed on the nearly 3 foot thick ice.

What an interesting event. Guess there is no risk of the ice melting anytime soon! V

Landing and taking off would be tricky in this runway...love this image...V

Looks so cold. Even this plane in the foreground is wearing a gaitor! V

That is quite the scene! Your weather must have been colder than ours this winter because the ice here has not frozen nearly so thick. V

I would imagine three feet of ice is more than enough to hold this event. I like the photo!

must be lovely to be there.V

must be slippery runways for landing and taking off, and some planes sport wheels...excellent POV solidifies the aviation aspect of a winter's event..

What a neat tradition. I hope it continues. No ice fishing or snowmobiling here this year due to the warming winters.

Great shot of this event. Hard to imagine a lake being used as an airfield!
