Growing up with both a Pug and Chihuahuas (and learning to love both Breeds), there was a time in my life when I briefly show bred AKC Pug dogs (on a very small scale) as well as Chihuahuas. My first Pug (as a kid) was "just a pet". After that, our next Pugs were titled show dogs. Notably, my homebred Pug boy "Sam" had both AKC Conformation and Obedience titles. He excelled. "Back in the day", Sam was a Dog World winner; plus also a High in Trial winner.
A Pug winning an All-Breed HIT "back then" was unheard of... Just like it was for Chihuahuas until our Champion Chrissy broke the glass ceiling for Chihuahuas... Chrissy also led the way for Sam. Both homebreds, Sam and Chrissy grew up together https://pbase.com/britestar/image/139709212 Although born the same year, Sam was a year behind Chrissy in showing in the competition Obedience show ring. But although Chrissy was a hard act to follow, he made his mark, too.
After producing that one last Pug litter which gave me Sam, I made a decision that I would be best seriously concentrating on establishing only one line of show dogs: either Pugs or Chihuahuas. After giving it very serious thought, my Breed of choice ended up being Chihuahuas; not Pugs. So, after Sam, there were no more Brite Star Pugs. Instead, there were many more generations of Brite Star Chihuahuas. Nevertheless, I still retain my love for the Pug dog Breed to this day so many years later.
I miss Pugs' quirky and fun personalities. I often wish we still had one in the family. However, (even though I grew up with both) Chihuahuas are my "forever" Breed. If we ever add another dog to our family, it will be another Chihuahua. Thus, the only Pugs I have today (and into the future) will remain like the one in the above photo with Bailey.
A real Pug dog is certainly a lot more fun. I have such good memories of my different Pugs of my youth. Each one was a unique individual, but they all had the wonderful, goofy, Pug dog personality in common. As a result of my early passion for Pugs, this statue with Bailey is a reminder of how much the Breed has meant to me. Pug are such characters with so much personality. Pug dogs love everyone. Plus, they (especially the real ones) pair so beautifully with Chihuahuas. During my early growing up years, we always had at least one Pug and the Chihuahuas. When I got married young, my husband got me, a Pug, and a Chihuahua... Our doggy family grew from there.
