Another day in Austin. In the morning we went to the Innerspace Caverns which were interesting but really not spectacular. We had lunch at a Thai place then headed to the Texas State History Museum. It isn' very large, but it houses one of the most interesting exhibits I have ever seen: LaSalle's ship La Belle. It sank in Matagorda Bay in 1686. It was discovered in 1995. There was a big project to excavate the wreck which was accomplished with a coffer dam so the work could be carried out on dry land. That was quite a feat. A short documentary can be found here. The most interesting thing about it is that the contents of the ship were intact. Over a million items from cannon to beads were recovered. Today's photo is looking down on the ship from a balcony above. If you every get to Austin, this is the coolest thing that you can see.
