What's the craic?

Visitors to Ireland are often confused by the every day references to craic.
It's common for people to ask 'was the craic any good' when inquiring about a night out or a party.
Craic can mean fun or, in the case of this doorway, news.
My news is that I'm now the last remaining new reporter on our paper, serving a town of more than 35,000 people and a wide hinterland.
Newspapers in Ireland, as elsewhere, are suffering as people turn elsewhere for news.
Today I said goodbye to colleagues who have been made redundant and I can't help wondering if holding onto my job could prove to be a poisoned chalice.

Oh dear, that is a shame...the print media is in decline for sure, but fingers crossed for you Mairead in 2023. Let's hope your colleagues can find other employment soon

That is sad to hear about your colleagues being laid off. It is happening everywhere now and there aren’t many local newspapers left. I hope all is well with your job. V

not such welcome craic then, and as hinted at here, a poor Xmas present to boot...here's hoping your paper survives, and that you still have a job in the new year..

That certainly doesn't sound good for your former colleagues, although I'm glad you still have a job. But yes, this kind of thing is happening everywhere.

Sorry to hear about your colleagues, it's definitely a sign of changing times and bad craic
