This species has been uplisted to Critically Endangered because information on local population trends indicate that the species is undergoing an extremely rapid population decline,
which is primarily caused by exceptionally high levels of trapping for the cagebird trade and by habitat loss.
In small parts of the range, conservation action managed to halt poaching pressure and local populations show signs of recovery.
