At the first Battle of Manasses in 1861, Union forces fielded at least 10 M1841 6-pounder field guns and Confederate artillery deployed at least 41 of the maneuverable pieces. The 6-pounder guns were soon seen to be too small and ineffective when compared to the 12-pounder light field gun ("Napoleon"). By 1862, the Federals stopped ordering Model 1841 type guns.
