Winter 2000, Ankara

I’m posting this picture for people who were surprised that it snowed in Ankara, which is located on the Anatolian Plateau and gets a fair amount of snow in winter. I can remember having to hike over the hill to work at times because no taxis were operating. Other parts of Turkey also see a lot of snow in winter, and the country hosts a number of popular ski resorts, among them one in the west near Istanbul, another in central Kayseri province and one in Erzurum in the northeast. Even Istanbul gets its share of snow – Istanbul Airport actually shut down in late January for a day or two after a heavy snowfall.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by PBase are decidedly unsharp.

The snow does make a beautiful city scene. It seems I learn something new on PBase everyday.

That is interesting. I never thought of Turkey getting snow.

Surprising indeed. Didn't think countries in that part of that part of the world got snow.

Ah, I see on Google Earth that Ankara is at c. 850 m ASL and 40d of latitude - so indeed it is not so surprising that it snows.

A new to me fact about Ankara. My first reaction was a groan to see snow again before reading the info.

We are currently in the middle of a heat wave so this shot is so refreshing.
