In an effort to spur sagging sales with some much needed publicity, Auburn attempted to set speed
and endurance records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with a stock 1935 Auburn 851 Speedster,
such as the Speedster seen here.

In July 1935, driver Ab Jenkins and an entourage of mechanics, including Augie Duesenberg, arrived
at the vast dry salt lake bed for the speed trials. Sanctioned by the Automobile Club of America
(AAA), Jenkins set 70 new American and international car records for a stock automobile. He set the
'Flying Mile Mark' at more than 104 miles per hour, and the 1,000-mile record averaging nearly
103 miles per hour. Jenkins’ Auburn was the first stock American car to exceed 100 miles per hour
for a 12-hour period.
