Labour Shortage

This is the Quathiaski Cove ferry terminal on Quadra Island. It is one of our critical connections to
the rest of the world (along with the Internet). However ferry traffic has been very congested
for the last three or four years, and it is especially bad in the summer tourist season. In the
background of this photo you can see two lanes of vehicles lined up on a road. All these vehicles
are waiting to get on the ferry. This line sometimes extends for over a kilometer and sometimes
people have to wait for two sailings before they get on.

This summer our ferry was scheduled to be replaced by two more modern ferries. The ferries are
ready to go and all the necessary infrastructure has been built. But BC Ferries cannot hire enough
qualified people to run the two ferries. In fact BC Ferries, which is the largest passenger ferry
line in North America, is frequently cancelling sailings on their major lines between Vancouver
Island and the mainland because of the labour shortage. Heads have started to roll.
The president and CEO of BC Ferries was recently fired.

Not good - such a pain having to sit in a hot car for lengthy periods. :(

Why would there be labor shortages in Canada? We have them here in the U.S., but we have Trump to blame.

Interesting to read and important that your connection is reliable

You laid out the problem well with your text and your photo clearly shows what's going on.

The labor shortages are effecting everything. People need to get paid more. That is a very interesting view and something not seen where I live. V

Good view from this vantage point. Interesting information too. I used to regularly take the ferry between Dover and Calais when I worked in England and maintained a home in Germany.

Great shot to show the current ferry situation. Guess you will be glad when the tourists go home. A shame they fire the president because there aren't enough qualified people to hire. Is he supposed to train them? Hope they sort it out.

Your image displays everything well. Amazing that Ferry's would be built without ascertaining that qualified people are available to run them. V

I've been hearing about the ferry problems out your way, but your narrative, and photo, really bring home how difficult it is. V

Interesting shot and info. Those darn tourists. Hope they can get this resolved soon.

this lays out the scene and story very well...lots of cancelled sailings this summer throughout the ferry system...short staffing surprising too, as ferry jobs pay well..

Great vantage point for this shot of all the waiting cars, and an interesting narrative as well. I hope they get things working properly again soon.
