The other day Paul

DeadWood

Liberty Park Sedalia Mo.

Not sure what is wrong with this old oak tree but it’s on its last leg.

I can identify with hard to keep up; we just found out a friend became a grandmother a week ago (saw it on Facebook).

Paul - don't feel too bad. When you live in a retirement community like we do, people pass or move on in larger numbers than you expect. It is sometimes hard to keep up with because not everybody puts a obit out in the local paper, which is only published 2x a week. You have to hope somebody will give you a heads up. The lady's network is better than the guy's network.

As you noted there was very little green foliage on this oak and mixed with mid summer and funky stuff behind the bark it’s dying pretty fast.

Speaking of dying, one of my old customers got throat cancer last year and I sent his father a text yesterday asking how “Todd” was doing. I should have checked the obituary’s first… geez I felt bad and dumb, he passed the end of June.

I might vote for the wild elephant - except it just looks like the natural bark rot of a dying tree.
Looking up I see a very thin and poor tree canopy; and I see a lot of brown dead leaves.
Possibly root rot.

It was up pretty high for a deer but just occurred to me we’re talking central ish Missouri so might have been a bear. I’ve never seen one in those parts but there have been many confirmed sightings. Or maybe an elephant escaped from the zoo. Paul

Antler rubbing? In Africa I'd suspect elephants.

Good capture of a bad problem. We have lost some oaks here as well, but mostly younger ones to the drought. Losing bark like this shows there is probably a bug problem as well.
