Old Turf Houses

There's two main reasons why turf houses were built in Iceland.
The first was the difficult climate and the second was the
lack of availability of timber and the abundance of other suitable materials including lava rock and turf.
This was the largest collection of trees we saw while in Iceland.

Almost a forest for a backdrop. The general lack of trees in the landscape has been noticeable in your gallery. Is it just too cold in winter for them? It looks pleasantly green and lush in this scene.

that's being at one with the land...how enlightening to see how they sit in the landscape, and compare with the more orthodox white structure..
