Datana moth caterpillar on willow

Larose Forest

I was wandering down one of the forest roads and looking at various shrubs for caterpillars when this one caught my eye. It is a bit hard to decipher what you are seeing, but the top end is actually the rear end of the caterpillar with a bit of frass (insect poop) attached. When disturbed this species throws its head way back and arches its body, then for good measure raises the rear end so that the head is hidden.
