Hanagasa
by Helen Betts

Okinawa, Japan

This is a hanagasa, or lotus-flower hat, worn with traditional kimono in the performing arts in Okinawa. The style dates from the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom (14th-19th centuries). It's hanging on a wall outside Shuri Castle, which is what I actually went to shoot (because it's all red!), but this caught my eye. To see what it looks like on somebody's head instead of on a wall, go to http://www.pbase.com/image/2355036

Beautiful hanagasa! The background pattern of stones really adds to the image. I learn so much from your posts, Helen :-D. Lisafx

Interesting and attractive subject, Helen...good lighting, color, and details. I like your perspective of this hat hanging on an old castle wall. MFC

Helen, what a really cool shot!! Once again, you don't disappoint and, not only is this one interesting to look at... it's one of my favorites of both galleries! I love the background you chose for the shot. Great work, Helen! Mark J
