Robber fly (Ceraturgus)

Larose Forest

This large (15-20mm) fly is very much a wasp mimic. I at first thought an oversized wasp had landed nearby, but a closer look revealed it to be a robber fly (Asilidae).

Excellent close-up Christine. Sure looks like a wasp to me, thus would have fooled me.
