Ants (Myrmica sp.) tending aphids (Chaitophorus populicola)

Skelton, Minnesota

Aphids and ants on a balsam poplar leaf petiole. One of the darker aphids is giving birth to a nymph (middle right, the new aphid is yellowish). Most of the aphids in the picture are probably clones of one or a few aphids from the original batch.
