THE ROYAL TOMBS
n 1340, Peter III the Ceremonious decided to be buried in Poblet. Thus began the story of the royal pantheon of the monastery, where his ancestors Alfonso I the Chaste and James I the Conqueror had already been buried.sculptors Jaume Cascalls, Aloi de Montbrai, Jordi de Déu, Pere Oller and Gil Morlanes will work on the execution of the ensemble, throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, which, once finished, will constitute a completely unusual funerary monument in the its elevated position above two arches and with its Gothic plywood roofs now gone. The complex was restored by Frederic Marés in 1948, after the return of the monks. There rest the kings of Aragon and counts of Barcelona Alfons el Cast (1162-96), Jaume el Conqueridor (1213-76), Pere el Cerimoniós (1336-87) and his wives Maria de Navarra, Eleanor of Portugal and Eleanor of Sicily, Joan I the Hunter (1387-96) and his wives Mata d'Armanyac and Violant de Bar, Martí l'Humà (1396-1410) and his wife Maria de Luna, Ferran d'Antequera (1412-16 ), Alfonso the Magnanimous (1416-58), and John II (1458-79) with his wife Joana Enríquez. There also rests Beatrice of Aragon twice queen of Hungary (1475-90 and 1490-1500).
