Black Lava Pearl Beach at Djúpalónssandur on Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland

Djúpalónssandur’s beach is filled with black lava stones. They have been highly polished by Atlantic Ocean waves since the last eruption of Snæfellsjökull in 200 AD. Locals call them Pearls of Djúpalón. The basalt column is named Kerling. According to folklore, this is the remains of a troll woman who turned to stone when caught in the sunrise. Also, on the beach there are remains of the Grimsby fishing trawler Epine (GY7) that was wrecked there on March 13, 1948.
