Loon Family

Mama Loon and her two new chicks.
The youngsters are only days old, having hatched sometime between this past Sunday and Wednesday.
14 years ago a pair of loons nested on this small pond for the first time.
I was fortunate then to be able to visit regulary and photograph the successful nesting and rearing of a young Loon.
The Loons, or their progeny, have returned every year since.
I returned myself this year after too long a hiatus and was quite pleased to find the cycle continuing.
They are fascinating birds and a joy to watch and experience.

It might be from reading Thoreau: I associate the sound of loons (though I've never heard it) with just these sort of ponds embedded in the forest. It is a species I'd love to see and hear.

It's a very sweet little family well photographed. It's nice that you were able to renew an old connection.

Very nice catch of this small family on the move.

excellent shot, and a reassuring sign that they are thriving...these babies are quick to get on the water, often preferring a ride on Mum's back for the first week or so..

What a delightful family portrait. They're beautiful birds, and you're lucky to have them so close.

Wonderful! They are so hard to get a photo of. There was a mama and baby outside our cabin in Iceland and mama seemed to know every time I would press the shutter down. She would dive under the water...they stay under for a long time too! Looking forward to seeing these little ones grow.
