In 1621 the city of Friedrichstadt was founded by Duke Friedrich III of Schleswig-Gottorf.
A new trading metropolis was to be created here. For this he brought many Dutch citizens to the city.
He granted freedom of religion to the persecuted remonstrants.
As a result of religious tolerance, many other religious communities soon called the city their home,
so that today it is home to five different religious communities.
