Old House-Mt. Jackson

MT. Jackson, Virginia

Mt. Jackson is a small town that lies between Interstate 81 and State Route 11 in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The Shenandoah Valley was the location of many early settlements and of numerous battles during the American Civil War. The Shenandoah Valley is one of the most beautiful rural locations in Virginia with it's rolling hills, small towns and farmlands surrounded by mountains. Route 11 used to be the main highway from southwest Virginia to northern Virginia before interstate 81 was built. In many ways it might be Virginia's own Route 66. A drive on Route 11 offers a look back in history in numerous locations. Many small towns on Route 11 have their own historic districts and a special charm but time has also passed by many locations. This old house caught my attention on a very hot summer day after I got off I-81 while driving to Arlington Virginia. The signs "Historic Mt. Jackson" caught my attention and so I went exploring. This style of farmhouse is very common along Route 11 and where some have been well taken care of, others show their age and disrepair.

I think I need to put Mt. Jackson on my list for the next time I am in that part of the world. Superb, vintage looking image. ~BV~

Very interesting information and a stellar shot to go with it. I love these old farmhouses, plain and simple, rooted to the land. V

In many ways those highways destroyed small town life and thriving urban areas. This is composed so well. Love the road sign by the porch. V

Nice placement into the frame nice sharp photograph and nice overview of Route 11 and history to explore.

I know this area well from my antiquarian book days. There were book events at Mt. Crawford I attended.

an interesting area judging by your text, and here's a good example of that...by style it looks a no-fuss place, perhaps reflective of earlier times when practical considerations held sway..
