Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
The Anasazi people built these cliff dwellings about 800 years ago, near the southwest corner of present-day Colorado. But they only lived here for 50 to 100 years, departing the area and moving south and west into present-day New Mexico and Arizona. The reasons for their departure are not clear, but probably include climate change, food shortage and perhaps conflict with other native American cultures.
