Old Sento

Kichijoji, Tokyo

A sento is an old style Japanese traditional public bathhouse. Common before most people had baths in their homes.
This one looks like it dates from maybe 1940s or 1950s, and is due to be demolished.
A characteristic of a sento is the tall chimney. Most heated the water with wood fires and so a tall chimney was needed to avoid sparks falling on the wooden houses.

Interesting commentary...shame it's to be demolished but it does look like it's seen better days

looks like it could fall down before the demolishers get there!

An interesting shot. Good that you documented the bathhouse before its demise.
I remember going to a bathhouse in downtown Munich as a boy. Hardly any of the old apartments had baths.

What an interesting piece of history. Too bad it has to be destroyed.
