Fuligo Septica

Gig Harbor, Washington

Dog Vomit Slime Mold, Scrambled Egg Slime;
Not a Fungus but a member of the Protist Kingdom, Class Myxomycetes. Depicted is the aethalium phase in which the organism begins to solidify from the transparent egg white-appearing plasmodial stage into a spore-producing stage. The plasmodial stage has millions of nuclei but only one cell wall enclosing them, and moves amoeba-like about the terain devouring bacteria and growing. When the crust of the depicted aethelium breaks it will release millions of spores into the wind.
