Fairy shrimp (Eubranchipus)

Larose Forest

Scooping out water from a trailside vernal pool (temporary pool) and into a plastic container in order to better see what might be found, we saw three fairy shrimp. These tiny Crustaceans are interesting little critters, swimming along on their backs, the stalked black eyes sticking out on either side of the head, they move with a fluid and almost magical grace. They are about 1/2 inch long and delicate as can be, enchanting to see and watch. After we'd both taken photos, the container was emptied back into the pool.

Now that's a fascinating macro. I wonder what happens to them when the pool dries out, and indeed, how they came to be in a temporary pool in the first place.
