April 26, 2022

This morning we departed Marfa early. Along the road there is the famous Prada Marfa store which is really some kind of art work. Ginny was interested to see it and we stopped, of course. Then it was full bore to Alamogordo, a four hour drive in total. On the back roads of west Texas there is little traffic, the road is good and the speed limit is 75.

Two objectives in Alamogordo. First, the Tularosa Basis Museum of History. It wasn't very large, but the exhibits were interesting. There was an exhibit on military aviation because of the presence of Holloman Air Force Base. One thing that was new to me was that the space shuttle landed here once. It was STS-3 (Lousma nd Fullerton) on March 2, 1982.

Just north of town is McGinn's PistachioLand, home of the world's largest (cement) pistachio nut. We had to stop there. There were lots of varieties to sample and we took a tour of the orchard. Then it was off to town to get some gas and salads for supper. It was nice to have a sunny day after a week of clouds and rain.

Today's photo is of Ginny doing her best Vannah White impersonation in front of the giant pistachio.
