Natural: Mourning cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa)

Burnt Lands Provincial Park

This is one of several species of butterfly that overwinter and emerge earlier in spring than other butterflies. When the weather cools down, or snow comes, these overwintering ones retreat to shelter, often under a flap of bark on a tree. In the UK this is known as the Camberwell Beauty.

A fine shot of this beautiful Mourning Cloak. I don't know how they are doing out your way,
but they don't seem to be as common around here as many years ago.

a fine, clear view that portrays well the comforting colours, especially the russet...at this moment it seems to have just emerged after the long sleep..

What a beauty. Amazing they can stay so 'fresh' through the winter.
