a few notes...first, sonnet 18 is to a man, (or lad? or boy?) whereas I always thought that it was written for a woman.
More to the point, the central conceit of the sonnet is that while the lad will in fact wither and die, his youth and loveliness will be forever because Shakespeare wrote...about him. (I am not so sure about this premise, hence this image).
