Bracket fungi, or shelf fungi, are mainly found on trees and resemble some mushrooms.
They produce shelf- or bracket-shaped fruiting bodies (conks), which are usually tough and sturdy.
I believe this one is called hoof fungus, tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius).
