Amphicar

Stonewall, Texas

Initially, I thought this was just another old car but then I read the history of it.
It is an Amphicar, built in Germany from 1961 to 1965. I had never heard of them. There were only 3,878 manufactured.

The story goes that President Johnson used to like to surprise his guests by driving them into a lake and then yelling "The brakes don't work! We're going down!" Then of course the car would start floating. He was quite the practical joker.

I looked these up online. They all look exactly like this one, just different colors.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Very cool subject and shot. If I had one of these I might be tempted to put it to similar uses. :0)

I heard about these as a kid. I definitely planned to get one "when I grow up."

Could be very useful with climate change and rising sea levels

Ok I'm revealing my age, but I remember when these came out. So cool!

they were a novelty at the time, but rarely seen, although at least one was around Georgian Bay in Ontario...good thing LBJ, powerful that he was, confined his joking to house guests..
