Belt and Sword of Orion

Ashton- Wildwood Observatory

Alnitak (#950; Orionis), Alnilam (#949; Orionis) and Mintaka (#948; Orionis) make up the 3 stars of the Belt of Orion from east to west (left to right). The flame nebula is left of Alnitak, and to the south of it is the Horsehead Nebula.

The Sword of Orion is made up primarily of 2 bright stars that bookend the infamous Great Orion Nebula, one of the most notable nebulae seen to the naked eye. Another nebula, M78, is also visible near the top left of the frame.

5-minute exposure.
